Final-year project carried out during the Master's program: identification of a problem during expeditions on boats. In the course of my research, I was able to draw on the sound advice of Guillaume TEYSSIE, engineer and learning experience designer, assigned as project tutor.

What is hydroponics?

Soilless cultivation technique

The plant is placed on a neutral substrate, while its roots are immersed in water, the substrate is irrigated with a stream of solution, which brings mineral salts and nutrients to the plant.

1. Difficult management of food stocks

2 - Excessive energy consumption by refrigerated appliances

3 - The limited shelf life of fresh produce

In the event of deficiency on board a ship, there is a risk of catching these diseases: influenza, hepatitis A, Seasickness, gastrointestinal diseases, legionnaire's disease or Scurvy, reappeared in the 21st century.

Plant Box is a solution to the food shortages that occur at sea during excursions lasting more than a week. The idea is to bring a hydroponic system on board the boat to encourage the consumption of fresh produce, fruit and vegetables.

Why propose a hydroponic system for sailboats?

Can we adapt our diet without losing comfort at sea?

Food on board a boat is a complex subject with rustic solutions. During medium to long sea crossings, freeze-dried and dehydrated meals are essentials for the crew.

However, these processed food packets retain only 60% to 95% of the original food's nutritional value, leading to a noticeable energy loss and less pronounced taste. As for fresh products, they spoil quite quickly, within just 2 to 3 days. Thus, maintaining a diet based on natural products is challenging on a vessel.

However, it is now possible to grow fruits and vegetables without soil contact, an ancient technique revived in response to increasing urbanization and the reduction of green spaces: hydroponics...
